Healthy Childhood

What do you consider a healthy childhood?

In the opinion of the World Health Organization (WHO), being healthy is more related to physical, social and mental well-being rather than the absence of sicknesses.

This is the ideal which José Luiz Egydio Setúbal Foundation believes in: after all, we feel that it is through the full development of opportunities for a decent life that children and teenagers will become adults fully conscientious of their role in society. This way, we will build a better society.

This is what motivated our creation back in 2010: the proposal of leaving some legacy for the improvement of the general health of Brazilian children and teenagers.

OUR WORK

If in the beginning we dedicated ourselves to medical assistance and development of research and teaching activities, in this new phase we will go deeper into the work of generation and dissemination of scientific knowledge in children’s and teenagers’ health, in order to contribute, in a relevant way, with the development and adoption of best practices, standards and Government policies that can have a relevant impact on the reality of children and teenagers in Brazil.

On enhancing our strategy for action, we bring our actions into alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations, and define the thematic priorities for the coming decade: mental health, food safety, and immunizations.

Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), as set by the United Nations (UN) in 2015, are part of a world agenda for the construction and implementation of Government policies that seek to guide humanity through to the year 2030.

There are 17 goals in all, with 169 targets and 232 indicators. They suggest urgency for leading society along a more sustainable path – socially, economically, and environmentally.

All the initiatives by FJLES seek to contribute to the SDG. For this, we define that, in the current decade (from 2020 to 2030), we will be participating in the following SDGs as top priorities:

2 – Zero hunger and sustainable agriculture – “End hunger, attain food safety and nutritional improvement, while promoting sustainable agriculture”.

3 – Health and well-being – “Make sure of a healthy life, and promote well-being for all, at all ages”

4 – Quality Education – “Guarantee inclusive quality education, and promote opportunities for learning throughout life, for all”

16.2 – Peace, Justice and Efficient Institutions – “Stop abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and all kinds of violence and torture against children”.

In a complementary way, we also participate in SDG 1 (No poverty), 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 11 (Cities and Sustainable Communities) and 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).

SDG 17 (Partnerships for the goals), that sets out a goal of “strengthening the means of implementation and reviving the global partnership for sustainable development” will be transversal to our actions.

LIBRARY

In its Digital Library, FJLES makes available a wide variety of academic articles, publications for the general public and videos that make up the technical and scientific content of the institution.

The disclosure of these materials to Governments, private institutions, and the third sector helps preparation and effectuation of Government standards and policies that can have a relevant impact on the adoption of best practices for the promotion of children’s health
